CookMidBord4.jpg (1722 bytes) Removing the Sutures

When your physician inserted the temporary C-tube into your
cecum, he or she also put in two or more sutures (stitches) to hold
the cecum to the wall of the abdomen. After the first two weeks, the
cecum will be secured to the wall of the abdomen and the sutures
are no longer needed.

You can remove these sutures yourself. Here’s how:

1. Remove the dressing over your C-tube in the usual way.

2. Unroll the gauze that is holding the sutures close to your skin.

3. With a pair of scissors, cut the strings close to the skin and throw
away the excess string that you cut off. (Figure 15)

4. The parts of the sutures that are inside your bowel will pass
harmlessly through with your stool.

5. Clean the exit site and put on a new dressing.

!! Caution: Be careful not to cut the C-Tube.
