Before you leave the hospital, a nurse will teach you how to:

  • change the dressing
  • recognize problems and troubleshoot
  • insert a Foley catheter (a non-latex tube) into the cecostomy
tract in the event that your C-tube comes out
  • flush the temporary C-tube with saline solution
  • give the irrigations of phosphate (enema) solution and normal saline

NOTE: It is very important that you understand and follow your
doctor’s and nurse’s instructions and take any medications
exactly as prescribed.

NOTE: It will also be important to communicate regularly with your
nurse or physician to establish an irrigation routine that
works for you.
