Percutaneous Cecostomy Insertion

Analgesia is provided in the form of intravenous morphine sulfate (0.05mg/kg each 4 hours for 24 hours), followed by oral acetaminophen (15 mg/kg every 3-4 hours as needed). The patient is allowed to ambulate as tolerated. Clear fluids are initially given until the patient has normal bowel movements and bowel sounds.

Antibiotics are continued for 48 hours:

  • Gentamicin IV: 2.5mg/kg - q8h
  • Metronidazole IV: 10mg/kg - q8h
  • Ampicillin IV: 20mg/kg - q6h

Metronidazole is then changed to an oral dose and given for a further 5 days.

The patient is usually discharged at 2 days post procedure with orders to flush through the catheter twice daily with 10 ml of saline. The pre-procedural rectal enema regime is continued for 9 days post procedure at which time the antegrade enemas are begun. The retention sutures are cut at the skin by the parents two weeks following the procedure. The patients are provided with a contact list of physicians and nursing staff who deal with any troubleshooting.
